How to write a connector description

Five steps from first word to test.

  1. Start with the job. Open with a verb the user would say: search, manage, create.
  2. Name the data source. Say which app or data Claude gets, such as "your Shopify store".
  3. Keep it under about 60 characters. The median tagline is 51 characters.
  4. Leave out claims and comparisons. Both stores reject promotion and comparisons with other products.
  5. Test with prompts. Write direct, indirect and negative prompts and check that the AI picks your tools when it should.

Methodology

  1. We pulled the public connector list from claude.com/connectors on 2026-10-03 (734 connectors, no login).
  2. We used the oneLiner field as the tagline.
  3. We lowercased the text, split it on non-letters and removed common stopwords such as "and" and "the".
  4. We counted characters, words and first words. We compared the top 25 by popularityScore with the other 709.

What we did not measure: whether tagline changes move rank or installs. Anthropic does not publish install counts. For the full dataset, see our Claude connectors statistics.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Claude connector description be?

Keep the tagline near 50 characters and 8 words. That is the median across all 734 Claude connectors.

Can I compare my connector with competitors in the description?

No. OpenAI forbids comparisons with other products, and Anthropic's review rejects promotional text in tool descriptions.

Does the description affect ranking inside Claude?

Anthropic does not publish a ranking formula. Its review asks that tool descriptions say what each tool does and when to use it, which is the text an AI reads when it picks a tool.

How do I write a ChatGPT plugin description?

Use a name and subtitle under 30 characters each, a long description under 4,000 characters, and up to 3 starter prompts. Start tool descriptions with "Use this when...".
